The Secrets of Social Media - I shouldn't be sharing this

So what are the Social Media Secrets?

Want to know how to get 1 million Facebook fans?
How to make a Video go Viral?

If your looking for a Guru or expert then I'm sorry I have no 30 day method to make you a 6 figure passive income, I'm just a Yeti talking about Social Media

So are these actually the Secrets? I think they are more common sense but it sometimes take writing them down to point them out.

  • Not every platform will work for you
  • It might not work straight away
  • If your not online all the time then your doing it wrong
  • Its all about the numbers of followers
  • Its going to require you to Engage with people
Not every platform will work for you
They are currently Hundreds of Social networks but its true that they might not actually work for your brand. Each platform allows you to communicate with your customers in a different way, Twitter will give you  140 characters, YouTube allows you yo upload a video that can be a 30 second clip or a much longer tutorial or product review.

Its very important to set goals and aims when using Social media so you can measure ROI. Make sure that you can report on its effectively I would suggest Google Analytic as you  then see and understand if you work is actually having a impact for your brand.

If you think a platform is not working for you ask the following questions
  • Am I just selling?
  • Have I engaged with the users?
  • Are they actually my target audience?
If you are just sending out sales messages your going to make your users switch off, no one wants to be sold at all the time.If this is what your Social media Feed looks like STOP posts something interesting you will be amazed at the difference, giving you customers some information about your industry how ever boring you think it is you are then adding value to and offering more reason to follow you.

It might not work straight away

"Perseverance is a great element of success. If you knock long enough and loud enough at the gate, you are sure to wake up somebody."
~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

It can take time to really get to understand something new as they say "Rome wasn't build in a day" .Take your time as you start to use a platform a new platform and understand your customers. The best advice is to keep trying and keep knocking at the gate. Change what you are posting, try posting a video try posting a picture, or sharing industry related information or even a lol cat.

Set your self time based goals for example you want to get to 100 followers in 30 days and then break that down into smaller goals 33 followers in 10 days and so on. The important thing is try different methods and engage with your customers keep trying and you will find what works for you and your customers.

If your not online all the time then your doing it wrong
You can't be online all then time the world is going on around us and with smart phones, tablets and laptops it's made the internet so much easy to access. But you don't need to be online all the time, Set aside an hour a day for Social Media then break that down into six 10 minutes chunks. You know what platforms you use so split your time between them. Also by splitting your time into small chunks you are not always on during same time of the day so this allows you to engage with different users.

Its all about the number of followers

I think this is the biggest Social Media lie, having thousands of followers means that you will get sales and make money. It wont mean anything people offer to sell you 10,000 Facebook likes or 10,000 twitter followers but they have no value as they are all fake and are bots. I would be happy with 1 follower that I engaged with. This is the same for every business you could have thousands of people come to your business and look at your goods but unless they buy then its a waste of your efforts to get them there. This really covers so many aspects of the Internet:
  • Traffic to your site is useless unless its targeted
  • Follower numbers don't matter if they are fake
  • Number of email subscribers you have unless they signed up
Don't buy traffic or followers just build real traffic and fans 1 real fan will do what 10,000 robots can't and that is tell other real people.

Its going to require you to Engage with people
This should be no secret here ENGAGE with people, be real and not just a brand. I may talk about Social media primarily but if you watch me I also talk about my kids and whats going on in my life. I use my own life to reach out to others I have kids so I can talk to others with kids, if you like sport then do the same.

So if you don't know how to engage follow these simple rules:

  • If someone comments write back
  • If they share your post thank them even share one of theirs
  • If you see something that interests you then share or comment on it
  • Don't just sell
  • Ask am I adding value to my customers with what I am offering online

So what are your Social Media Secrets?
